Kindergarten Week 4

We had a very busy week in Kindergarten this week!  The students transformed into authors and created their very first book at school.  Their books were based on the story, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?"  The students coloured pictures of the animal characters from the story for the illustrations in their books.  They used a high quality colouring rubric to self-assess their work and make goals for improvement.  For example, many students coloured their first animal and went out of the lines a lot.  With Mrs. Donamo's support, they were able to use the high quality colouring rubric and realize that they were going out of the lines, their work looked a little messy, and that they could "do better."  These students decided that if they coloured slower then they would be able to stay in the lines when colouring.  They tried their colouring again and were able to stay in the lines and improve their work.  When all the characters were coloured the students then had to cut them out.  We learned how to hold our scissors properly, how to use our helper hand to hold the paper and how to cut on a straight line.  We then learned how to use a glue stick to glue our characters on the pages of our books.  The students understand that they are responsible for their classroom materials and have to ensure that the glue stick lid is all the way on after use so it doesn't dry out.  After each page had the character glued on we learned about the front cover of a book and the students had the opportunity to create their own front cover and print thier names on it.  The final products are something to be celebrated and the students were beaming with pride to take them home and be able to read them to their families.  Be sure to ask your child to read you their very first book made in Kindergarten!
