Pumpkin Carving Draw

For the past two weeks the Kindergarten students have been drawing a variety of pumpkin faces and cutting them out for our pumpkin carving draw.  They used their knowledge of shapes and feelings to draw the faces.  We built a high quality drawing and a high quality cutting rubric.  The students had to achieve the happy or happier face to be able to put their pumpkin entry into our draw.  The students used these rubrics to self assess their work and set goals for improvement.  We had a total of 54 pumpkin entries and today we drew one pumpkin entry and carved that face into our pumpkin.  The winning entry was Kensi's and she drew heart eyes, a heart nose and a smiling face.  Kensi said, "My pumpkin feels happy."  Through this task the students learned how to draw and identify shapes, how to cut on a curved line, how to self assess and how to set goals for improvement, and how to identify and draw emotions.

 Yesterday the students got to use a mixture of white glue and shaving cream to create Puffy Paint Snowmen.  The students had never worked with this mixture before and were surprised to see how "thick" and "goopy" it was.  They were all very proud of their 3D snowmen!

Exploring Nature Using Math, Drawings & Writing

 The Weather this week was Awesome!  We went outside to learn about the signs of Spring, and to explore Nature by careful observations.  First, the students worked in small groups at Hula Hoop Stations, and took turns using the magnifying glasses to look closely at the ground inside the Hula Hoop area.  They then recorded their observations by drawing a picture of something they found in their Hula Hoop area, writing the corresponding numeral of how many they saw, and attempting to print the word of what they found.  Then we went for a Nature Walk and discussed signs of Spring.  The students noticed one of the trees was turning a light purple/orange colour and we talked about what plants need to survive.  They observed the trees very closely, and even found a spider and a ladybug!  It's interesting what you notice when you take the time to look closely at Nature!  Last the students were challenged to figure out which part of the hill they can...

What Do You Want to be When You Grow Up?

 The students have been learning about Community Helper Jobs and starting to think about what they want to be when they grow up.  Each child created a book of different community helper jobs and the tools that community helper would use.  Each child also got to create a video showcasing their learning about the job they want to have when they grow up.  Here is the first page of their books, which shows the job they wanted before learning about different jobs:
